EPS Race 1 at Megadrom-Geilenkirchen

On 24-25 october we had the first European Pan Race at the famous Megadrom track in Germany. There were entries from Holland, Belgium, Germany, France and even Sweden.

In Modified it was a great driver field with Marc Fischer, Markus Mobers, Yannik Prümper, Jan Asmer and Alexander Anderson, all ready to have a nice comparison.

In Stock Christofer Hedlund and Robert Krens were the guys to beat. They would get some real competition from John Ermen, who attended his first electric race.

On Saturday it was only practice, so it was time for me to find a good setup for the race. During the day the traction came up in a huge way, so I needed to play around with tyres, to prevent the car from traction rolling.
At the end of the day the car was really good, I was happy.

On Sunday morning, when our first qualifier started, I was very surprised my car was understeering like hell. I used the same tyres and setup than on Saturday, but the car drove totally different?? Hmmmm….I blamed the temperature for that, so I simply did not change any for the next qualifier.  Well…it got even worse and worse, even more understeer.
It seemed like the traction totally went away. This could have had two reasons, one was the TT cars on the track in between our runs, which took away the traction, or the open doors on Sunday, which lowered the temperature of the track.

However, I totally needed to change my setup for the mains. It was Fischer who took TQ 2.5 seconds in front of me, with my teammate Jan Asmer in third almost a lap down on me and Marc. Still, Jan managed to outpace Yannik Prümper and Alex Andersson, which are two world class drivers.

In stock it was Christofer Hedlund who took TQ in front of Serpent drivers John Ermen and Jens Ginnuttis. Great job John, for your first 1/12 race!

Hmmm…for our first Modified main I changed my setup again to create some steering. Finally, the car was way better in the first main, but I still could not match Marc. I finished 2nd in the first main, some 3-4 seconds behind Marc, with Jan taking 3rd spot.

Second main, another setup J and yes, finally it was close to good, not perfect, but I could follow Marc now to give him some pressure. Well, after 2 minutes Marc made a mistake and I could take the lead. He was following me closely and we had a superb race for the win. For 6 minutes our cars were within a half second, and at the end I could win the final.

Third main, next setup J We took off and I could follow Marc until I made a stupid error. I hit a board and touched Marc accidently. I gently waited and let him go again. Hmmmm..but…Yannik and Jan went by too, so it was Marc leading from Yannik and Jan. Soon Marc made a mistake and all 4 leaders touched. I came out 2nd behind Yannik, so the goal was to catch Yannik.

After 2 minutes I passed Yannik and pulled away easily. After I had a gap of 2-3 seconds I decided so save some energy, as I was really close to dumping all the time. Well, this was a good decision, as my car ran weird all of a sudden anyway. After the final I found out a rear tyre was seriously chunked due to all the crashing. Anyway, I took the win, and therefore I took the overall win too. Marc took 2nd overall with Yannik taking 3rd. Jan had simply bad luck in the mains, he finished 4th, but should have been 3rd. His pace was good enough for that.

In stock John Ermen was very unlucky, as he suffered from crashes at the start. Well, he always recovered in a great way, but at the end he finished 3rd overall. This is still a great result and John enjoyed his first electric race. It was Christofer Hedlund that won the stock class, after an intense battle with Robert Krens, who finished second.

Well, two races, two wins for me, not bad to start off. Jan and me have to test seriously more on that track, as the German Nats will be held there in march.

Take care!
Markus Mobers
